1_Powerfit24_Logo In our latest series of careers advice for young people we look at being a TV sports producer as a great career choice. The producer makes decisions on which sports matches or events are to be broadcast and also puts together an agenda of discussions for the TV expert panel.
If you have seen Match of the Day you have seen the TV experts discussing the action and also analysing what happened and why. Of course this is not done without preparation to ensure the smooth running of the program which makes for better viewing. This is the job of the sports producer so as you can see it's quite crucial to the program.
There is little seen during the broadcast of a live sporting event that does not fall either under the direct or indirect supervision of a TV sports producer. As a TV sports producer you will work very closely with the director. The director is in charge of all the elements that go to make up the broadcast whilst the producer is responsible for the preparation of all of the elements.
Some of the benefits of being a sports producer on the TV or that you get to meet famous sports personalities, working a lively environment, and get to see plenty of sport.
With a starting salary of around ?18,000 this is quite an attractive option for a recently qualified graduate. To excel in this position you need to be able to make quick informed decisions and also have the ability to put together data and information from various sources.
One downside to this work is that you will probably be working most weekends as that is when most sport is broadcast on the television. It goes without saying that you need to be fairly passionate about sport and if you take part in one or more activities yourself this will only help your cause in landing such a position.
To qualify for this career path you will need good A-level grades of A's and B's and you will probably start your career as a researcher or perhaps an interviewer moving on to become a sub editor. Another way to start this career path is to work in local radio or local television and learn the ropes there. You need to be energetic, enthusiastic and willing learner but the payback is generally worth it.
