Face of Home Depot Canada is changing - Toronto Star

Good story:
CALGARY - At 27, the decorated Mercedes Nicoll heads to La Molina, Spain, in search of a first top-three placing at the FIS snowboard world championships.
At 18, the shining new star, Palmer Taylor, aims to establish herself on the global halfpipe stage.
"Oh yes, a podium, definitely,'' Nicoll, of Whistler, B.C., says. "Top 5, at least. I just got all my tricks back, so hopefully I can put a good run together. I feel I'm riding my best, ever.''
"I'm looking for a Top 10 finish,'' Taylor, of Collingwood, Ont., says. "I want to prove to everyone that I belong.''
The objectives may differ slightly. The mindset? Not at all.
A 31-athlete Canadian snowboard delegation departs Thursday for the ninth edition of the world championships, which open Saturday in the Catalonian resort 100 kilometres north of Barcelona, tucked snugly near the French border in the Pyrenean Mountains.
The team target is four medals in the six showcased disciplines: big air, halfpipe, parallel giant slalom, parallel slalom, slopestyle and snow-cross.
"We always want to hit top 50 per cent and we've got funding goals of top 16,'' Canadian freestyle coach Leo Addington says. "If we can get athletes into finals, then we'll see if they can put it together for a podium run. That'll depend on the day, for sure. I'm not putting podium expectations on anyone. Finals is always the goal. Then, the thinking changes to: Do we have the tricks to step it up?''
In halfpipe, the chief medal hopes shape up to be Brad Martin of Ancaster, Ont., bronze medallist at the 2007 world championships, and Nicoll, who has accumulated seven World Cup medals and a sixth-place finish at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics over the course of her career.
Rounding out the half-pipe team are Taylor; Sarah Conrad of Halifax; Alexandra Duckworth of Kingsburg, N.S.; Justin Lamoureux of Ancaster, Ont.; and Derek Livingston of Aurora, Ont.
"Nowadays, I take it day-by-day,'' Nicoll says. "How I'm feeling. How many tricks I have. What I think I'm capable of. But I'm confident. More now than ever. I feel I can do well in Spain. A lot of athletes do these days, I'm sure.
"The Olympics, I think, showed a lot of diversity within our sport. Everyone falls. Everyone has bad days. Really, anything is possibly. The big countries are still favourites, but girls from all over are pushing the limits now, and that's amazing.
"I was ecstatic to make finals. Honestly, on the very last day of practice I learned a new trick and that pretty much put me into the finals. The happiest I've ever been. Weird, but I felt no stress whatsoever. The pressure was just getting there. I just went out and enjoyed myself.''
Nicoll will turn 30 by the time the Sochi Games roll around, but fully believes she'll still be in the thick of it.
Palmer, meanwhile, should just be hitting peak form three years on. She is indisputably Nicoll's heir apparent.
"No, (outside expectation), doesn't scare me or intimidate me,'' Taylor says. "I try to deal with it in a good way. I take it as a compliment, not a burden. It pushes me to go farther. I've sat down and charted a progression from now until Russia. You have to look ahead.
