Hi, I'm Long John Higbie. Knowing how far you hit your golf clubs is one of the most important, yet overlooked aspects of golf and a critical aspect to performing to your best capabilities on the golf course. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to ruin a Bird play by picking the wrong club for the job. You could turn a sure-shot at the green into a sand-filled nightmare because you did not gauge distance correctly.
One example of this - if you will permit me - is when we get to a course that is a Par 3. Say the hole is 150 yards into a slight breeze and a little uphill. Now I say to my partner that I think "it is playing 157 yards, so I am going to hit a 9-iron".
After consideration my partner comes to the same conclusion: use the 9. Now, I am pretty confident in my ability to hit the ball a good distance. You might even say I am a very long hitter. I also know that we all hit differently, so why would my partner choose a 9-iron just because I did?
Simple pride plays a lot into decisions such as this. No way he is going to hit a 9-irn 157 yards. And sure enough, short-city in the trap and he proceeds to bogey the hole.
This is why all players need to keep their own golf distance club tracker, be it on a spreadsheet or in a simple notebook. It is so annoying how guys will just assume they hit a 7-irn 160 yards when they really have never measured it to the yard.
Don't go back to your country club until you've spent a few hours at a local driving range. You need to separate yourself from friends and rivals and just focus on learning your own limits.
You will hopefully learn two things from this: how straight you are striking the ball, and how far you are hitting it.
The more buckets of balls the more you learn about yourself and what steps to take to improve how you strike the ball.
It's like zeroing in a new rifle at the start deer season. By creating a golf distance finder like this you will only improve your game. A small notebook that will fit in one of your pockets is invaluable here. Take down notes for each club that you hit. Take a look at the following example:
5-iron=170 Yards
8-iron=150 yards
Pitching wedge=105 yards
Keep adding more clubs that you practice with until you have a full record for your golf distance finder notebook. Practice your golf distance club every few months in order to keep sudden changes from sneaking up on you.
My website has a golf distance excel file that can help you average out the data for each golf club and determine an average distance you can hit with each club. It will also compare your averages with fellow amateurs and pros, so you can see where you fall in the big scheme of things.
Once you do this crucial exercise you will never need to fear failure from incorrect club selection again.
I can guarantee your chance of a favorable outcome will improve greatly as long as you have good, accurate averages with each club.
You will be amazed at how quickly you can improve your distance with each club over time. This chart will let you do that as well!
So when you finally get to your favorite cow pasture, you will be able to pull out your trusty distance chart and plot your moves through the mine fields of sand, water, trees and any other obstacles on to the ball yards that may have been erected to test your patience and proficiency.
It's starting to make sense why Joe DiMaggio would carefully survey his surroundings before each baseball game he ever competed in. He would inspect things like wind speed, grass height, and the hardness of the ground. Details are very important, especially to golfers. It's good to pay attention to them!
Before beginning your round, check the hole's distance on the course's score card. Study the layout of the course and find where all the traps and hazards are.
All your friends will think you're acting nutty, but don't let this bother you. They'll be copying you once they see how well your game is improving.
